2021 Volvo XC40 vs. 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB: Big Power, Safety and Efficiency in a Subcompact

The XC40 moves ahead in 2021 with exciting models and a new all-electric powertrain. Add in top safety features, surrounding luxury, and Scandinavian design, the XC40 represents a generation of compact crossovers that stand alone. Volvo ensures each model impresses with abundant equipment and an enjoyable driving experience.

Although there are a growing number of competitors in the luxury subcompact crossover segment, the XC40 keeps moving ahead of the competition. Here, we compare it to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 beats Mercedes-Benz at the powertrain game

The XC40 offers several well-equipped models. And don't let the small size fool you—Volvo ensures you can access a variety of power. Available in two models, the T4 engine consists of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Models with this option have an MSRP of $39,950, which is nearly $7,000 less than the base MSRP of a GLB.

The T5 engine is found in three gas models and outputs 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This exceeds the 221 horsepower of the GLB 250, the base model of that series. The upgraded AMG GLB 35 offers 302 horsepower, but also a $57,500 beginning price tag. You can buy a top-grade XC40 Inscription for nearly $8,000 less.

The most powerful vehicle in this comparison is not an AMG GLB model, but the XC40 Recharge. With 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque, it practically outclasses the AMG GLB 35. Each model also has a 335 km range capability and can charge 0%-80% in only 40 minutes with 150kW DC fast charging.

The XC40 rides past the GLB with a wider power range and better available efficiency.

The 2021 XC40 is safety-focused

The XC40 also earns recognition the Mercedes-Benz GLB doesn't—an IIHS 2021 Top Safety Pick+ designation. A good safety rating is essential for subcompact crossovers, and this only adds a peace of mind to your purchasing decision. The XC40 received high ratings in crash avoidance and mitigation, side front impact results, structural testing, and so much more.

Overall, the XC40 carries a seal of safety approval.
