2021 Volvo XC90 vs. 2021 BMW X5: Refined Technology, Power, and Price

The 2021 XC90 is a luxurious, mid-size crossover that is ready to mobilize your lifestyle. The Scandinavian design adds elegance and function, including smart connectivity and advanced hybrid powertrains. Buyers have the choice of selecting four, five, six, or seven-seat configurations for their new model, striking a balance between cargo and passenger volume.

The XC90 stands out among a challenging segment. Here, we compare it to the BMW X5, a competitor.

The 2021 Volvo XC90's powertrains are most efficient

In a changing world, we must make smart driving and purchasing decisions that lessen the impact on the planet's resources. Volvo offers three powertrains for the XC90 that accomplish this and more. The Momentum produces 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque while achieving a fuel consumption rating of 11.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway, making it the most efficient gasoline powertrain between the XC90 and BMW X5.

The T6 engine, which is available in all models, features 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The X5's xDrive40i does have a moderate horsepower increase, but T6-equipped XC90 models achieve a better fuel consumption rating of 12.1 L/100 km in the city and 8.5 L/100 km on the highway.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 outduels the X5's in hybrid performance

The XC90 Recharge has the most advanced powertrain in this comparison with a supercharged four-cylinder engine and electrical system that produces 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque.

The Recharge has a competitor in the BMW xDrive45e. It also has a hybrid powertrain, but falls a bit short at 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. What's most noticeable are the fuel consumption comparisons. The Recharge dominates with a rating of 9.1 / 8.4 L/100 km compared to the xDrive45e's 12.2/10.6 L/100 km.

The X5 M50i does achieve the highest performance ratings. However, you will be paying a high premium for the equipment and inefficiency.

The XC90 offers more than great engines, styling, and technology. It includes unique features like Pilot Assist and the Sensus Infotainment system. It's also versatile, offering up to 1,856 litres of luggage volume, which provides a peace of mind for long vacations.
